THE SOUND OF AUDITORIUM
visual-documentary intermedia performance, 60 minutes

The Sound of Auditorium presents a visual-documentary collage about the status quo of the university students and university education in Slovakia today. It takes their perspective and ambitions in order to discuss about the role of culture, authorities and inspiration. As a top-level educational institution, the university is supposed to encompass all these phenomena in order to form and develop the students' talents.

The Sound of Auditorium originated as an intermedia musical-theatrical performance, which works with the unique character of architectonic spaces of university auditoriums. The auditoriums as symbolic and ceremonial spaces impress with their scale and artistic rendition which emphasizes its meaning for the society. However, these spaces remain hidden from the general public behind the facades of known buildings. This performance brings a way to make these unknown places of university ceremonies available again. The project was originally conceived as a site-specific project for the auditoriums of Slovak Technical University in Trnava (architect Maxim Čabelka), Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of Slovak Technical University in Bratislava (architect Martin Kusý) and the auditorium of Slovak Agricultural University in Nitra (architect Vladimír Dedeček and Rudolf Miňovský).

The space of an occasional university auditorium of the City Council in Žilina itself became a stage for reflective and critical theatre – an arena for symbolic depictions of timeless as well as current social processes, absurdities and humor. The Žilina performance could not take place in a real auditorium as those in the city have become the subject of thermal insulation or deconstruction. These facts are more than just a mere commentary on the status of university education outside of the centres.
